Whoever said kids are supposed to be happy just because we’re kids?
Hel-lo. Just because a bird’s a bird does it have to fly? Try telling that to an ostrich! My name is Jane Smith. I changed it to Thistle Fabuloso because thistles are purple and fabuloso gives me something to strive for. No one ever calls me that, but I do in my head and that’s where everything important happens, after all.
I’m nine and three quarters, and I’m taller than everyone in my class. Some of the kids call me “Giraffe Girl.” I have boat-sized feet (probably to keep me from falling over from being so tall). I have hair that looks like it’s been electrocuted, parents who got divorced last Friday without
consulting me, and an understandably gloomy outlook on life.
And then guess what? I had the most amazing dream —
where everything that was wrong in my life got fixed!
I became a whole new version of myself, but it was still me.
And when I woke up I knew it was just a dream but I actually
felt…hopeful. I’d like to share my dream with you — if you have
time and would stop staring at my ginormous feet!

BARRA GRANT (Writer) is an award-winning actress, playwright, and filmmaker. She also happens to be the daughter of the first and only Jewish Miss America, Bess Myerson. She wrote and performed her one-woman show, “Miss America’s Ugly Daughter” throughout Los Angeles and off-Broadway in New York. She overcame her childhood depression with a particular way of looking at the world and continues to worship at the feet of the god of humor.
JEFF SHELLY (Illustrator) began his career as an animator and illustrator in New York. His journey with the Walt Disney Company took him to Los Angeles, where he has served as the lead Character Artist for over 25 years. Jeff’s illustrations have found their way into magazines, children’s books, educational publications, and advertisements.
He works from his office at Disney and from
his home studio in the Hollywood Hills —
a bustling hub of illustration, writing, painting,
and perpetual home repairs.
